In a bold new direction for the Vikings universe, Netflix has officially announced “Lagertha: Shield of the North,” a highly anticipated spin-off series that brings fan-favorite Katheryn Winnick back as the legendary shieldmaiden — this time, in the mysterious realm of the afterlife. Far from the battlefields of Kattegat, the series promises to explore the mythical and spiritual side of Viking lore like never before.
Set in Valhalla, the sacred hall of the fallen, Shield of the North reimagines Lagertha not just as a warrior, but as a leader of souls. After her tragic but heroic death in Vikings Season 6, many fans believed her story was over. But this new series asks: What comes after death for a legend?
According to showrunner Deborah Chow (known for Obi-Wan Kenobi), the series will blend epic action with mythological drama, as Lagertha finds herself caught in a celestial war between the gods, forgotten heroes, and restless spirits. “This is not just a continuation of her story,” says Chow, “It’s a rebirth.”
Katheryn Winnick, who has since directed and starred in various projects, expressed excitement about returning. “Lagertha changed my life. Revisiting her in a world shaped by Viking beliefs, female power, and spiritual destiny — it’s a dream I didn’t know I still had.”
The series will introduce new characters as well — Norse goddesses, slain kings, and warriors from all corners of Viking history. And yes, familiar faces may return too, including Travis Fimmel’s Ragnar and George Blagden’s Athelstan — in visions, memories, or perhaps something more.
Filming is set to begin in Norway and Iceland in mid-2026, with sweeping landscapes, haunting set designs, and CGI-enhanced depictions of Norse cosmology. The creative team promises a visual feast that reflects both the brutality and beauty of Viking beliefs about the afterlife.
“Lagertha: Shield of the North” is set to premiere on Netflix in Spring 2027, with a teaser trailer expected by late 2026. One thing’s clear: death was not the end — it was only the beginning
